The best Mac apps of 2018 These 30 useful apps are absolutely essential for Mac lovers. By • 9:00 am, August 20, 2012 • • • PC games: they can be the bane of a Mac gamer’s existence. The Mac may be a better computer than a windows box, but even so, most games don’t support OS X. Even on Steam, the leader in cross-platform computer game support, most games run only on Windows. The reasons for this are manifold, including mid-level integrated graphics chips and less customizable hardware, but it shouldn’t be this disparate. There are a few options for running those PC games on Macs, of course. There’s Boot Camp, which allows you to run a full copy of Windows right on your Intel-based Mac, but it requires a reboot to switch between OS X and Windows environments, which can be tedious. There are emulators you can buy, like Parallels and VMWare Fusion, but these never quite pan out, in my experience, as they always seem to be fraught with issues when connecting peripherals, mice, etc. They also cost a bit, and require a full copy of Windows, which will run you some money, too. I just want a way to play a game that is created for the Windows operating system on my Mac, without a reboot, without buying a new program or new copy of an operating system I really don’t want to use. Luckily, there’s a way to do just that. What Is Wine? Seriously, that’s the self-referencing recursive acronym for Wine. So clever, those open source folks. Wine actually runs as more of a translator between the instructions in the PC program and the Mac operating system. It basically fools Windows into thinking they are running in a Windows environment, without actually emulating that environment (and taking the same performance hit) like Parallels does. Wine has the benefit of a large, open-source community for support as well, which means it will continue to get better and improve compatibility for a lot of games along the way. Speaking of compatibility, not all PC games are going to work with Wine. To find out if the game you want to try to install on your Mac via Wine will work, head over to the, where they have an entire database full of the games and applications that will work with Wine. They even have levels of how well these work with Wine, including Platinum, Gold, and Silver levels of compatibility. I chose Guild Wars: it’s a game that has gone free to play lately, is Windows-only for now, and it is listed in the Platinum compatibility list on the Wine HQ site. All the examples from here on out will be from my own experience installing Wine to play Guild Wars on my Mac Mini 2011. Once you and pick a game, you’ll be ready to make sure you have what you need to run Wine. What You’ll Need First up, you’re gonna need an Intel Mac.

How to make external hard drive to work with Mac and Windows Pc. We my cloud,wd my passport ultra, Western Digital,Samsung M3 Portable 2.5 inch, slim, D3 station, ultraslim,S3, Toshiba Canvio. ![]() ![]() Update: After about 3 weeks. I plugged in again into my MacBook and left it there. After more than an hour I came back and the drive showed up on my Mac again. (So somehow the problem got fixed.) I ran First Aid on Mac's Disk Utility. It says the drive appears to be OK. So I don't know what fixed it exactly. Problem: When I plug my WD Passport Ultra 4TB external hard drive WDBBKD0040BBK-0A (with 2TB of family photos) into my MacBook Pro it has fast flashing of light and can't be mounted. It can be read on a Windows laptop (after Windows automatically fixed an error). I tried opening up Disk Utility on my Mac, but it just spins forever trying to mount the external hard drive. Nothing ever shows up on Disk Utility. How it broke: The WD Passport Ultra was plugged into my MacBook on battery. I was not actively reading or writing to the external hard drive, but it did have a list of directories open (no individual photo files, but just the directory names). The battery ran out. When I charged up my Mac again it says that the disk was not ejected properly. Ever since that my WD hard drive has the flashing problem and can't be mounted on my Mac. I tried changing the Mac laptop, changing the USB cord, same problem. I then plugged in my WD hard drive to a Windows laptop. It says that it detected an error and had the option of automatically fixing it. I clicked 'Start' and let it ran, but it didn't have a progress bar and just had a 'Cancel' button. After running for 3-5 minutes, my mom came in and unplugged the external hard drive forcefully (I yelled at her for doing that). We tried plugging it into the Windows laptop again, and my files and photos could be read!! But it still can't be read on Mac and has the flashing problem. Why is it like this? What is broken? How can I test what is broken? I'm asking because I have had accidentally unplugged other WD external hard drives without ejecting in the past while not writing data, like in this case, but the drives never broke. What is up in this case? I'm curious if this is something that happens a lot or if it's just a less durable hard drive I got. Because I'm at a point where WD's warranty can give me a new drive to replace it, or I can fix this drive myself. (I have copied the photos out to a new drive on a Windows machine.) Because if it is something that happens with the same frequency in all drives, shouldn't I just fix it? What is the best free software program on Windows that might potentially fix my problem? Mac programs are good too if they can actually access it since my Mac can't even mount it. As you have backed up the photos on the windows machine, you should try to use disk utility to fix your drive. There might be a volume mounting error or a format error, which can be fixed by using a function in disk utility called 'first aid'. On your Mac, spotlight search for disk utility. It should show up. When it opens you should see a column on the left with all your disks listed there. As you can see, this column has both internal and external drives listed there. Be extremely careful, do not tamper with the internal drives. Go over the list very carefully and select your external drive. It should be fairly obvious which one it is. In your case it should be labeled as something similar to WD passport ultra. If not, you can look at the storage capacity and check if it matches with your disk's (here, 4TB). Next you need to run first aid. Hackintosh OS X El Capitan 10.11.5 Mac operating system is now available for Microsoft Windows device users to experience the all new features and functionalities of OS X El Capitan 10.11.5 (Build: 15F34) on Windows PCs and Laptops powered by AMD and Intel based hardware. On September 29, 2015, Apple announced that OS X® El Capitan, the latest major release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system, will be available on Wednesday, September 30 as a free update for Mac® users. El Capitan builds on the groundbreaking features and beautiful design of OS X Yosemite, refining the Mac experience with updates to window management, built-in apps, and Spotlight® search, and performance improvements to make everyday activities — like launching and switching apps, opening PDFs and accessing email — faster and more responsive. “People love using their Macs, and one of the biggest reasons is the power and ease-of-use of OS X,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “El Capitan refines the Mac experience and improves performance in a lot of little ways that make a huge difference. Feedback from our OS X beta program has been incredibly positive, d we think customers are going to love their Macs even more with El Capitan.” Refinements to the Mac Experience El Capitan gives you simpler and smarter ways to do the things you do most with your Mac. A streamlined Mission Control® makes it easier to see and organize everything you have open on your Mac. > Spotlight gets even smarter in El Capitan. You can now use Spotlight to check stock prices, weather conditions and forecasts, sports scores, schedules and standings, and even athlete information. You can also search with Spotlight to find a file using natural language. Simply type “email from Harrison in April” or “presentation I worked on yesterday” and Spotlight will help you find exactly what you are looking for. You can resize the Spotlight window to display more results or move it anywhere on your desktop. OS X built-in apps are even better in El Capitan. Safari now features Pinned Sites to keep your favorite websites open and active and a new mute button to quickly silence browser audio from any tab. Mail introduces Smart Suggestions, which recognizes names or events in a Mail message and prompts you to add them to your contacts or calendar with a single click. You can also swipe to delete messages, just like in iOS, and juggle multiple emails while Mail is in full screen. In Photos, you can now edit locations, batch change descriptions, sort albums by date or title, and take editing to the next level with third-party editing extensions from your favorite developers. > El Capitan features an all-new Notes app. That lets you drag and drop photos, PDFs, videos and other files into a note, and add content directly from other apps, such as Safari web links or Maps locations, using the Share menu. Easy-to-create checklists help you keep track of important to-do items, and the new Attachments Browser organizes your attachments in one simple view, making it easy to find what you’re looking for. ![]() ![]() With iCloud®, your notes stay in sync so you can create notes on one device and edit them or check off items on your other devices. A 1 inch movement should correspond to (for examples sake) 100 pixel movement. 2 inches should move your cursor 200 pixels. 3 inches at 300 pixels. Mouse smoothing/acceleration provides a nonlinear movement to the mouse. Taking into considering not just how much the mouse moved but also how fast you moved, it'll increase or decrease the total amount actually moved. Moving 1 inch over, say 1 second, will opnly move you 50 pixels. But moving 1 inch over 100 milliseconds (thats fairly fast) might move you 200 pixels. So when doing slower movements, your mouse becomes less sensitive allowing for finer movements. When moving your mouse quickly your mouse is more sensitive causing you to move a greater amount over the same distance. I dislike mouse acceleration in most games because i can never control the actual smoothness of the acceleration curve. ![]() Apr 14, 2017 - Do you hate mouse acceleration? Coming from decades of Windows use, the steep acceleration curve that macOS defaults for mice has. Since High Sierra, the Magic Mouse (v2) no longer connects to MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014). While most users are having a smooth experience with the latest operating system, some have been facing annoying issues. In this post, we will go through the 10 common problems of macOS Sierra and how to fix them. 10 Most Common macOS Sierra Problems and How to Fix Them #1. MacOS Sierra Upgrade Shows “An Error Has Occurred” Or “Failed to Download” This is a common issue that many users face while upgrading their Mac to a new operating system. The solution is quite straightforward and easy to tackle. To fix this issue, you have to delete the existing macOS Sierra installer and re-download it. To do so, open Launchpad and you should see the half-downloaded “Install macOS Sierra” file with a question mark on it. Delete this file, reboot your Mac and retry the download process. Mac App Store Shows macOS Sierra as “Downloaded” If you go to the Mac app Store and see that macOS Sierra is shown as “Downloaded”, then it means that you either have installed the beta version or the GM build. To be able to download the final version of macOS Sierra, you have to remove any existing “Install macOS Sierra” installer files from your Mac or from a connected hard drive. Once you’ve removed the installer files, go back to the Mac App Store and you should be able to install the final version. “This copy of the Install macOS Sierra.app application is damaged, and can’t be used to install macOS” Error If you see this error while attempting to download and install macOS Sierra, it means that the file is either corrupted or was interrupted during download. CATHERINE THE VAMPIRE Download For PC (Windows / Mac). Here’s how to set up the Dolphin emulator to get the best performance and leave many games at. Media Access Control (MAC) technology provides unique identification and access control for computers on an Internet Protocol (IP) network. In wireless networking, MAC is the radio control protocol on the wireless network adapter.Media Access Control works at the lower sublayer of the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI model. If you have the official Nintendo Wii U adapter or the 4 port Mayflash adapter, then you can utilize Dolphin's native support for these adapters (Direct Connect). The Direct Connect feature has 0 input lag and is 100% accurate to a console. Always use this if you can. While using Direct Connect, Dolphin configure the controller to match console automatically. This being said, you should not use the GC Pad Settings and changing the settings there will not affect your controller while Direct Connect is on. *Uninstall the vJoy driver if you have it installed. Only applies if you have installed vJoy in the past. *If using the Mayflash adapter, set it to Wii U mode. Do not try to use PC Mode. Download and open. Open the options menu and click 'List All Devices'. Select WUP-028 in the pulldown menu, and ensure the USB ID is 057E 0337. If you do not see this then try plugging the adapter (specifically the black USB cord) into a different USB port. Select WinUSB on the right column then click Replace Driver and select Yes to modify the system driver. Open Dolphin > Controllers. For Port 1, in the dropdown menu, select GameCube Adapter For Wii U and to verify that it works, click configure and make sure Direct Connect is selected and the adapter is detected: (Quick Note: If you want rumble on and are using the Mayflash 4 port adapter, then you have to plug in BOTH USBs. The Official WiiU only needs one to activate rumble) 6. YOU CANNOT CONFIGURE DIRECT CONNECT LIKE OTHER ADAPTERS. The inputs will work as intended. Just start the game emulation to test. If you're adapter is NOT being detected, make sure you close all other instances of dolphin and restart 5.0-321. **For other OS's, follow these respective guides ( / ). Using Different Adapters that are Incompatible with Native Support Examples: With most adapters, you do not need any drivers. They are simply plug and play unless you want rumble. Configuring a controller in the GC Pad Settings First Open Dolphin > Controllers, for port 1, Select Standard Controller in the dropdown then click configure: From here, you will have to remap your controller. Here is an example ideal setup of a controller: Device Use DInput. The 0 denotes the port; 0 is port 1, 1 is port 2, ect. Make sure it says GamePad and not keyboard. ![]() ![]() Buttons The buttons are easy to set up. You just click the gray box then press the corresponding button on the controller. Button threshold does nothing. Sticks For the sticks, you do the same thing. You want to set the radius to 100. It is probably one of the biggest mistakes people make. It defaults to 70, and it is noticeable in game if your radius is too low. Sometimes you will walk instead of run or be unable to do cstick attacks or smash attacks in general. A real gc controller has a radius between 90 and 100. For dead zone, you want to set it as low as possible before the square in the stick box turns red when idle. If it is red when idle, that means your stick is 'moving' when you don't want it to. Just decrease it until the square turns red when you aren't touching it. Shoulders You want L/R to be set to a button and L/R-Analog to be set to an axis. The L/R is the 'click' of the shoulder button, or the hard press. That is why it is a button. If you keep getting axis when trying to get the button, try holding in the shoulders before you click the gray box and then try to get just the click. Alternatively, just right click the gray box and manually set it by clearing, then clicking on the correct button, then hitting the select button. The L/R-Analog is your light press. That is why you want an axis. Ensure that what is next to 'axis' has symmetry; mine say Xr-+ and Yr-+. They are the same except one is X (left) and one is Y (right). Threshold is that gray bar you see a little bit past the middle of the box below the the threshold option. You set the line to the max distance the red goes when you push in the triggers. 80-90 is about accurate but it doesn't make too much of a difference so you shouldn't worry too much about it. Other things Background input is really nice because it lets you use your controller when Dolphin isn't in focus, or it isn't selected. I prefer to have it on. Iterative input just goes through a setup for you. Don't worry about it. Profiles can be nice, they let you save a configuration which you can send to people, or you can use them to swap between different types of controllers that need different settings. If you installed Zadig on the wrong device and your device/controller will not work (Non Official Wii U Adapters/Mayflash 4port adapters (Wii U Mode) only): This is a pretty simple fix. Nowadays you can click on a menu and it will drop down and stay down while you cursor down to the item you want and click again to select it. In the old days you'd have to hold down the mouse button the whole time (click and drag), move it down to the item you want and release the button to select it. The old mechanic still works in modern OSes but it's entirely optional. And since some modern menus are crazy huge, it's a lot easier to be able to move the mouse without having to hold the button down the whole time. This was well reported when it first came out in OS 8, if you followed the Mac press. It was, believe it or not, a controversial change. I guess a large part of the backlash was from people who felt Apple was just changing it to be more like Windows (almost never a good idea). It's really a silly thing to care about, but it bothered me at first, too. There was an extension to add sticky menus before it was standard, and an extension to remove it after. Back then you could customize EVERYTHING with system extensions. Except for the crashing. I don't miss that part. However, if I recall correctly, emulation of BIOS is not supported on Mac for any device that is not attached via a SATA connection (ie. Internal drive, DVD drive). So, I believe that you cannot boot from your USB key. If you want, you could install an alternative bootloader on your Mac that would allow you to do this. See this post for more info. Here is the sequence of events: • I have a 15' MacBook Pro (mid 2012 IIRC 2009). Its HDD crashed. • I replaced the HDD with another Toshiba HDD from my Dell laptop (which was running Windows 7). The Apple service center guys did it for me. • I have another 13' MacBook Pro (Early 2015) which is running El Capitan • On this second MacBook Pro, I created a bootable installer for macOS Sierra on an 8GB USB drive as per the steps here: • Inserted the USB drive into the old MacBook Pro, started it up, held down the Alt (Option) key. • I am shown HDD and USB drive as options for boot disk. Touchpad doesn't work, only keyboard works. I choose USB using right arrow key and hit return. • After a couple of seconds screen turns grey with the stop (Forbidden) symbol at the center. A minute or so later system shuts down. • I try to boot multiple times, same result. • I reset PRAM (Cmd + Alt (Option) + p + r), but no difference. • Cmd + R at system startup to get into Recovery Mode did not work. (I guess this requires a OS to be installed) What am I doing wrong? Any help in getting macOS installed on the replaced HDD is greatly appreciated. Few things to note: • The old MacBook on which I am trying to install macOS sierra is a HDD machine, which the new MacBook on which I downloaded the OS and created the bootable installer is a SSD machine. • The replaced HDD put in the old MacBook is good and functional because just before being put in, I attached it to my new MacBook using an HDD adapter and copied contents. • I do not need the data on the HDD. It can be wiped clean before installing macOS Sierra. • The last OS version run by the old MacBook Pro is Mavericks (10.9). I am absolutely fine installing a version of OS X as old as Mavericks. I am not particular about macOS Sierra itself. I just need to know where I can get older versions. Please let me know if any more information is needed to suggest a solution. Answer to this talks about using Disk Utility from the USB drive. How do I do that? Update 2: I was able to boot the new MBP using the USB drive. It went all they till I was shown the options to install or start disk utility, etc. So Thumbdrive is all good, the new HDD is also good. So is it the case that since the installation USB drive was created on a newer MBP, the bootable part was created in such a way that the old MBP is not able to understand. Have there been changes in the boot table across Macs? UEFI v/s BIOS or EFI v/s MBR - anything like that? Update 1: Adding photos showing the screen state Windows is trying to bootup. So HDD is good USB drive is appearing as a boot option. So drive is properly formatted? It stops at this point on selecting USB drive. ![]() Image via Before You Start The obvious first step here is to. But before you do anything else, a word of caution: once you've used the OS X installer, it will automatically delete the file you need to make the backup disk, so you'll want to either make a copy of the installer or create your disk before you upgrade. You can use a USB flash drive, external hard drive, or DVD-R disc, but the USB drive is quicker. If you're using a USB drive, it has to be formatted as 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' and set to partition type 'GUID Partition Table' in order to work. Image via Once inside, browse to the ' Contents > SharedSupport' folder where there will be a file called ' InstallESD.dmg.' This is the image file that contains the information you need to create the backup disk. Step 2: Open Disk Utility (located in your Applications > Utilities folder). Step 3: Drag and drop the ' InstallESD.dmg' into the list of drives on the left and select it. This should make it appear in the Source box on the right. If not, you may have to click the ' Restore' tab as seen below. Word Processing on Your Mac Some of us are old enough to recall life before word processors. (It wasn’t that long ago.) Consider this sentence: How did we survive in the days before every last one of us had access to word processors and computers on our respective desks? That’s not a great sentence — it’s kind of wordy and repetitious. The following sentence is much more concise: It’s hard to imagine how any of us got along without word processors. The purpose of this mini-editing exercise is to illustrate the splendor of word processing. Had you produced these sentences on a typewriter instead of a computer, changing even a few words would hardly seem worth it. If things got really messy, or if you wanted to take your writing in a different direction, you would end up yanking the sheet of paper from the typewriter in disgust and begin pecking away anew on a blank page. Word processing lets you substitute words at will, move entire blocks of text around with panache, and apply different fonts and typefaces to the characters. You won’t even take a productivity hit swapping typewriter ribbons in the middle of a project. Before running out to buy Microsoft Word (or another industrial-strength and expensive) word processing program for your Mac, remember that Apple includes a respectable word processor with OS X. The program is TextEdit, and it call s the Applications folder home. The first order of business when using TextEdit (or pretty much any word processor) is to create a new document. There’s really not much to it. It’s about as easy as opening the program itself. The moment you do so, a window with a large blank area on which to type appears. Have a look around the window. At the top, you see Untitled because no one at Apple is presumptuous enough to come up with a name for your yet-to-be-produced manuscript. Notice the blinking vertical line at the upper-left edge of the screen, just below the ruler. That line, called the insertion point, might as well be tapping out Morse code for “start typing here.” Indeed, you have come to the most challenging point in the entire word processing experience, and it has nothing to do with technology. The burden is on you to produce clever, witty, and inventive prose, lest all that blank space go to waste.
